Entrevista: Kathryn Calder

Kathryn Calder empezó su carrera musical en Inmaculate Machine, grupo que dejó después de 2 discos y 4 Eps, dejó este proyecto porque era imposible de compatibilizar con tocar con the New Pornographers, grupo al que se incorporó antes del “Twin Cinema” y con el que lleva desde entonces. Durante 2009 sacó tiempo también para grabar su primer disco en solitario, que vería la luz en el año 2010, con el título “Are you my mother” y que fue el segundo mejor disco del año para este blog. Todos esos proyectos musicales merecen mucho la pena y obviamente tenemos ganas de escuchas sus nuevas canciones en solitario. Ahora, justo antes de embarcarse en la primera gira de presentación de su disco en solitario, por ahora sólo en Estados Unidos, ha sido tan amable de responder a las preguntas de este blog. Aquí tenéis el resultado.

Empezaste tu carrera musical en el grupo Inmaculate Machine, que dejaste en el año 2008, ¿qué recuerdas de esa etapa?

Les tengo muchísimo cariño y crecí en esa banda. Tuvimos tantas experiencias locas y viajamos tanto juntos que nos convertimos en una familia.

En el disco “Fables” Alex Kapranos de Franz Ferdinand y los chicos de The Cribs os hicieron los coros de “Jarhand”, ¿cómo lo conseguisteis?

The Cribs estaban grabando en Vancouver con Alex Kapranos como productor y nuestros productores les invitaron a ver el estudio en el que estábamos grabando. Necesitábamos un grupo de chicos para que nos hicieran los coros y quedó perfecto. Estábamos contentísimos de que estuvieran dispuestos a cantar en nuestro disco.

Kathryn Calder started her musical career in the band Inmaculate Machine, which she left after 2 albums and 4 Eps because it was impossible to coordinate with her new role in the New Pornographers, band that she joined before “Twin Cinema” and she is still with them. During 2009 she saved some time for the recording of her first solo album which was released in 2010, called “Are you my mother?” and that was the second best album of the year for this blog. All those musical projects are worth listening and we are also looking forward for her new songs. Now, just before the start of her first proper tour to promote her first solo album in the US, she has been kind enough to answer the questions of this blog. Here is the result.

You started your music career in the band Inmaculate Machine, which you left in 2008, what are your views about that stage?

I love those guys and I grew up in that band. We had so many crazy experiences and did so much travelling together, we became family.

 

In the album “Fables” you got Alex Kapranos from Franz Ferdinand and the Cribs to do the backing vocals of “Jarhand, how did that happen? Do you still keep in touch with them?

The Cribs were recording in Vancouver with Alex Kapranos producing, and our producers invited them to get a tour of the studio where we were recording. We needed a gang vocal done, and it was perfect. We were so happy they were willing to sing on our album.
